Key documents: the new service in context

The new adult advancement and careers service is the result of the government's strategy as it responded to the Leitch review of skills in December 2006. The Leitch Review concluded that although we have made good progress on skills and employment, we still lag behind most successful economies. A significant factor in this is weaknesses in our skills base. The Government accepted the analysis in Leitch and the need to aim to become a world leader in skills by 2020.

The IAG Review was established as a direct result of the Leitch review of skills

The Leitch Review was followed by World Class Skills: Implementing the Leitch Review of Skills in England, in July 2007 which proposed a new joined-up system of support for adults who want to progress. The new adult advancement and careers service was also proposed as being a core component of this joined-up support system.

In Opportunity, Employment and Progression: making skills work, November 2007, the Government set out the requirements of a truly integrated employment and skills system, delivering a seamless journey for those moving from benefit to training and on to sustainable employment.
